Packing near-hurricane force winds, Tropical Storm Hermine struck the Mexican coast about 40 miles south of the U.S. border Monday night, the U.S. National Weather Service reported.
The National Hurricane Center announced earlier that Hermine was gaining strength as it neared land, with its top sustained winds growing to 65 mph (100 km/h) before hitting shore. It made landfall about 9:30 p.m. ET, according to the National Weather Service office in Brownsville, Texas.
The storm was expected to make landfall Monday night and move inland over south Texas on Tuesday, and Texas authorities already have blamed a Houston woman’s Sunday night drowning on the storm.
Galveston Island Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis said a friend reported that 44-year-old Veronica de Leon Jaure had stepped off a sandbar into a trough and disappeared into a current. The friend searched for half an hour before calling police, Davis said.
Hermine brought rough waters to Texas beaches throughout the Labor Day weekend. Davis said his agency rescued 18 people over the weekend, including four on Monday.
„We put up the red flag on Saturday,“ he said. „Waters were rough all day. They were got rougher all weekend. Rougher still today.“
Forecasters had posted a hurricane watch Monday between Rio San Fernando, Mexico, northward to Baffin Bay, Texas, while a tropical storm warning was in effect for La Cruz, Mexico, northward to Port O’Connor, Texas.
Hermine could dump 4 to 8 inches of rain over northeastern Mexico and south Texas and as much as 12 inches in isolated areas, forecasters said, with the potential for flooding and mudslides, especially in northeastern Mexico. In addition, a storm surge will raise water levels by as much as 2 to 4 feet along the immediate coast near and to the north of where the center makes landfall, forecasters said.
Mexico’s Civil Protection Agency warned against marine activities and said oil platforms in the area should prepare for stormy weather.
„This system will represent high danger for the northeastern part of the country in the beginning of the week,“ the agency said.
